Last year saw a blossoming of English Teachnet resources, with sincere thanks to Stephen Powell [Monks Park School, Bristol], Jo Loveridge [Dartford Technology College, Kent] and Pinaki Chakrabarti [Astor of Hever School, Kent]. But 2008 has also got off to a wonderful start and the first resources to be uploaded for the new year have been contributed by Robin Shakespeare. Building a website on Bullying is primarily aimed at teachers of English but can also be used by teachers of ICT and Citizenship, which is why this resource is being featured here. This unit is aimed at students who are starting or just started secondary education. It provides opportunities to research and evaluate advisory websites [focusing on bullying] and then to develop the ideas behind the construction of their own site, and the writing and organisation of materials that will provide advice and guidance to other students. After five weeks of preparation, the students are given the opportunity to present their website to their peers and to critique others'. As part of the project and in order to meet Literacy objectives, students need to be sure that they also understand the differences between 'informing' and 'advising' and the conventions of each. They are asked to find an example of each from a bullying website and display their findings.
