Presentation: Introduction to the Christmas Fair project

Presentation: What does 'enterprise' mean?

This presentation, invoking memories of 'Star Trek', explains to students what is meant by the terms 'undertaking', 'bold' and 'enterprise'.

Dragon's Den - many students will be familiar with the BBC's television programme but the concepts of 'pitching' and 'venture capital' may need to be explained, also the balance between risk and reward, profit and loss etc.

Students watched a student version of Dragon's Den which was stopped at key points to clarify whether pitches involved 'goods' or 'services' and to discuss issues such as patents and copyright etc. Students were asked to preempt the Dragons' decision and to give their reasons.

Roles and responsibilities - students need to identify division of labour if the goods and services are to be produced on time ... and then to say which role(s) they would like to fulfil.

Brief job outlines | Project roles and responsibilities

As an extension to this exercise, students looked at recruitment and analysed job advertisements. They then made a list of attributes they would like to see in a teacher to replace me ... further, two students undertook mock interviews for my job!

Working in groups, students interviewed each other for certain key jobs which gave them practice in considering what attributes the jobs required.

Lastly panels of students were asked to interview me for 4 jobs - careful questioning was required to try and uncover a 'dark secret' I harboured in each job interview, making me unsuitable for the job in each case!

Handling money -simple games can help students cope with the simple mental maths required when giving change. This can be done simply with real money as a role play, mental maths questions, or on line, using sites such as Funbrain.

Making products - it was decided that five of the groups would operate on a carousel, spending one day on each production activity to gain a range of experiences and skills [from the different members of the teaching staff involved].

The presentation provides further details of manufacture and endeavours to use recyclable materials within the school; this video records some of the students' experiences in the workshop and this video montage an illustration of the Christmas Fair products that materialised!

Evaluation - the students enjoyed the experience and gained a lot of new and useful skills. The only real disadvantage, was that not all could be involved in the marketing. The stall stood up well when compared to the professional stallholders and people did not realise that all the goods were made by our Y7 students, as opposed to being bought in.

Over £500 pounds was taken by the students in about 3 hours, which greatly impressed them!
