Lesson 5 - Revision and assessment

Objective

To consolidate their skills with multipliers

Resources

Calculators, computers [optional], IWB

Starter/Revision Activity

You can use the Treasure Hunt in two ways:

Print out the clues and stick them around your classroom randomly or, if it’s suitable, around a playground or large space [the clues should be spread out so they cannot read the answers from afar but not hidden from view]. Give students a copy of the answer sheet. Tell students they can start at any clue but once they have worked out its solution they must write the solution on their answer sheet and then find the clue which has this solution at the start of it.

If the thought of students running around is too much, print out cards from the alternative Treasure Hunt presentation and cut them up [you should randomise the order before printing if you want the students to cut them out]. Students can then arrange the cards in a circle in pairs or individually until they have figured out the correct order of cards.

Set a time limit for either activity and then bring the class back together and go through the answers [the powerpoint slides are in the correct order but some students may have started at different positions around the cycle].

Lesson

If you have access to computers, students can complete the assessment on the computer, or if you’d rather not have them find out whether they got the answer correct straight away you can print out the test and go through the answers later using the conditionally formatted excel spreadsheet.

Plenary

Open up L5 plenary. The slides show the working for problems where the calculations use multipliers. Ask students to come up with the problems that would require this sort of working.
