All too often, we work with World musics in a rather superficial, decontextualised way in the classroom. The activities in these Units should strengthen students’ understanding of the contextual importance of music making in different cultures. By working with a musical genre which is already part of their cultural world, we should be able to make classroom music more engaging for more of our students.
This unit will consider exploring the similarities and differences between hip hop from different countries. Internet research and practical work using music software commonly found in schools will be used to analyse existing rap and to create original music. Schools will be encouraged and supported in establishing global links with schools in other communities to share and celebrate each others work. In so doing they will gain a deeper understanding of some of the global dimensions which music allows us to explore.
