Rulers

Starter

Why are places on maps not as big as they really are?

Why are distances on maps not as large as they really are?

The answer is ... because we use scale and to understand what scale is, we shall begin by measuring a school desk. and answering these questions ...

1. How wide is it?

2. How long is it?

3. How high is it?

4. What is the perimeter of the desk?

Main Activity

Question: How could we represent our desk on a piece of paper? How can we make it look just as it does in real life?e use a scale to reduce the drawing. Lets use a scale of 1 cm on your A4 paper = 10 cm in real life.

So my classroom desks at St Peter's are 60 cm long and 120 cm wide. If we are to draw a scale drawing what size would we draw it?6 cm by 12cm)

Your Next Task

We are now going to draw our classroom and some of the furniture as a scale drawing. As a class, return to the spreadsheet of the classroom furniture you completed for lesson 1. We are now going to decide as a class on the scale we shall use to draw our map.
