SwirlsKandinsky is recognised as one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century for his pioneering work in Abstract Art. He was also an important writer and his attempts to develop a theoretical basis for his work are still regarded as essential reading for aspiring artists.

He considered music to be the most developed of the ‘abstract’ arts and in his work on colour and form, he consciously made connections between developments in music and his own work in the visual arts.

This project in five phases, uses the Kandinsky painting 'Swinging*' as a resource for generating musical ideas for a group composition. Download the project plan or follow the links below and on the left hand menu.

Phase 1: research on the background to Kandinsky and his theories on the use of colour and shape
Phase 2: explore the use of ICT to generate sounds
Phase 3: Class discussion on how colour, shape and position can be translated musically
Phase 4: Small group work on producing musical material from some of the elements in Kandinsky's painting 'Swinging'
Phase 5: Putting the work together
