Lesson 4: Reflections, Rotations and Translations on a coordinate grid

Prerequisite knowledge

Students should be aware of coordinates and the equations of lines on a coordinate grid, including the line y=x.

Content

This is a recap lesson but also introduces the important concept of transformations on coordinate grids.

Open the PowerPoint presentation and give students a copy of the worksheet. Go through the 2 examples on the board by clicking the mouse. The 1st and 4th transformations on the sheet are done.

Depending on the ability of the class you may want to encourage them to do all the translations first, then the reflections and finally the rotations.

When they complete the task they should have the familiar joke 'What do you call a man with a rabbit up his sleeve?' to which the answer is Warren, but this is not given.

Note: Ensure that no student reads out the joke before others have finished, it ruins others' enjoyment of the task. You could start it in the lesson and get students to finish for homework to avoid this. The brightest students should take no longer than 25 minutes on this sheet so be aware of this.

As an extension students are to come up with similar transformations to give the answer WARREN. Encourage them to use at least one of each of the transformations they have studied so far.
