Relational Databases with Microsoft Access

The purpose of the scheme of work is to provide instruction in creating a loan system using a relational database in Microsoft Access. This will be delivered through taught lessons where students work through exemplar materials and address the curriculum requirement for key stage 4 Applied ICT (where creating a relational database is a curriculum requirement) and for key stage 5 ICT and Applied ICT “A” level courses (where system design is a curriculum requirement).

The target ICT skill level for these exercises is intermediate or advanced.

Teachers are provided with sufficient materials that can be used immediately in the classroom.

  • Students will be able to create a loans system for a video shop which will require the creation of a relational database bringing together lists of members and videos through a loans table
  • Students will be able to create a form with corresponding sub forms to facilitate easy entry of data into the underlying table structure
  • Students will be able to create queries that monitor the return of loaned items and calculate fines for overdue items
  • Students will be able to create printed reports requesting the return of overdue items
  • Students will be able to will modify the system so that it can deal with multiple items being loaned or sold in one transaction

Note that the exercises are not sequential; exercises 2, 3 and 4 are all based on exercise 1 (not on each other). This means that students are not given a whole solution in these exercises but should combine ideas from each exercise into a global solution of their own.
