Installing the CPU Removing the packaging CPU and fan CPU Safety precautions
It is easier to install the CPU in the motherboard before installing the motherboard into the computer. It is likely that the CPU is packaged in a similar way to the one shown above.

The CPU is supplied with its own cooling fan. Start by removing all of the packaging. This may be discarded.

Note that the CPU pictured has a protective covering on it which can be discarded at the last moment before installation.

With the protective cover removed it is possible to see that the CPU has two locators that only allow it to be installed one way around in its socket. Take care when handling the CPU – never touch any of the metal components

Un-package the motherboard and remove the protective cover from the CPU socket. Discard the protective cover. Pull back the spring clip and CPU cover. Note the orientation of the socket Carefully drop the CPU into the socket. Make sure that the CPU is seated in the socket the correct way around. Replace the hinged CPU cover Push back the spring loaded retaining clip

RAM Safety precautions

Remove RAM from packaging

Installing the fan Installing the fan RAM Safety Precautions Installing the RAM Step 1

The technique for installing the fan varies according to the design – see instructions provided.

Install the CPU fan and plug the electrical connector into a convenient power supply on the motherboard RAM is very susceptible to damage from static electricity. It is better to earth yourself (for example by touching a tap or metal water pipe) before handling RAM and take care never to touch the metal connectors

As with the CPU, it is often easier to install the Random Access Memory into the motherboard before attempting to install the motherboard into the case. Remove the RAM from its packaging.

Note that there are different speeds and formats of RAM. In order to stop installing the wrong type each has its own pattern of cut-outs that align with pegs in the RAM socket. Check that the grove in the bottom of the RAM corresponds to raised sections in the RAM socket

Pull back the RAM clips at either side of the socket.
Always install RAM in the socket nearest the CPU
Note the different coloured RAM sockets. When installing two sticks of RAM – use the pairs of the sockets of the same colour (both the blue ones for example)

Push the RAM into place and then force it home using the pressure of your thumb until the RAM clips close at either end. This takes a lot of pressure – you might need both thumbs!
