Constructive waves are with a swash and backwash which material. Destructive waves are waves with a weaker swash and strong backwash which breaks frequently causing erosion.

The longer the fetch the stronger the waves and the greater the erosion at the coast. Wind that blows for a longer time create more powerful waves.

Harder rocks are more resistant to erosion.
