Edna enjoyed school life, where there were strict rules on the uniform that had to be worn, and she recalled a French mistress that used to teach her class needlework and on the day of the Bastille would not allow them to speak anything but French.

Edna was taken out of school to go and work in a shop when she was fourteen because her mother said she wasn't learning anything, and that she could

teach her what she needed to know. However, during her time at school she was awarded "Top of the Form" and was given a Bible and a Shakespeare book as prizes.
