Repeat Patterns

Introduction and context

From the motifs of Islamic buildings to Victorian wall paper patterns, examples of the use of repeat patterns for decoration can be found throughout history. The use of computer aided design and computer aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) is fundamental to creating patterns for mass production in industry, particularly for textiles, wallpapers and gift wrap. Students’ understanding of these processes is a requisite of the national curriculum.

Project Outline

In this project pupils will use a range of software applications to explore and create motifs that are then built up into repeating decorative patterns. The designs created may then be further developed as traditionally printed materials.

The curriculum project specifically supports the aims of the Maths and Computing Specialist College in the context of Art and Design. Working with other colleagues at Stratford High and staff at associated primary schools, this project will show how creating repeat motifs and patterns, using software applications, supports and reinforces pupils’ understanding of pattern design. Students will explore simple design stages and develop their ideas using the software applications available
