PROJECT
OVERVIEW
Purpose
| Students/teachers | Skills
addressed | Overall value
| Tips
This project
is aimed at creating a video of a classroom activity, using video
editing techniques to incorporate images, text, music and subtitles.
It also allows the user to edit out mistakes, instead of having
to re-record from the beginning. This allows teachers and students
to record role play exercises, group discussions, presentations
etc and then make a permanent visual record to share with other
students. Students find the use of video stimulating and it encourages
greater care in planning and preparation.
This task was carried out in partnership with Catherine Murray,
also from St.Gregory’s School, and her
project covers the background preparation in more depth.
Students/Teachers
The students who participated in this project were a higher ability
year 8 class [aged 12 and 13]. This is suitable for most students
but may require some technical support in downloading the video
to the computer.

Skills
addressed by the project
- Communication – students will work in small groups and
discuss their work
- Planning – they develop and refine their work to enhance
its quality
- Critical thinking – to process information in a structured
sequence of events
- Presentation skills – present their ideas in a variety
of ways and with a clear sense of audience
- Research skills – use the Internet and other sources
to find a variety of material to be included
Overall value
An excellent way to motivate students to participate, learn and
take an active role in classroom presentations. Students and teachers
will be encouraged to extend their work, knowing that it will be
shared with others.
Tips
Have the support of the school ICT technician to assist you in
downloading the video from the camera into a suitable area on the
computer. This can be time consuming and needs to be prepared ahead
of the lesson. It will be useful to demonstrate the skills involved
using a projector and a whiteboard.
