The purpose of the project is to provide students with an authentic learning experience focusing on the use of ICT in MFL. The four MFL skills areas – listening, speaking, reading and writing – will be incorporated by the project. The topic for study is ‘les monuments de Paris’. The project will be learner-centred and performance-based, and initial research into Paris monuments (in both English and the target language) will culminate in students performing prepared role-plays in French, based on a tourist visit to Paris. Students will use ICT equipment to produce a Powerpoint presentation on their chosen monument.

This project is linked to the assignment produced by Lyn Chalk, also of St. Gregory’s School. Lyn’s project is designed as an extension activity, to enable students to film their dialogues and edit their digitally-produced films.

Students

The project is aimed at Key Stage Three students, ideally pupils of Year 8 or Year 9, with at least one year’s study of French. The project took place at the end of the summer term with a class of Year 8 pupils – they had therefore been studying French for almost two years. The class was divided into six groups of five for the role-play – one member of the group was the tour guide, and the remaining four play the parts of tourists. The project covers much of the vocabulary that students have already studied, such as transport, directions, phrasing questions, description and presentation.

Skills addressed by the project

Listening and Speaking: Students perform their role-plays to the class, so all members of the class will be involved in listening to the work of their peers.

Reading: Students research their chosen monument using internet resources in both English and French. Authentic target language materials are also supplied, e.g. maps of the Paris metro system. Students are provided with appropriate vocabulary in order to aid their understanding and maximise their learning potential.

Writing: Students prepare a target language script for their role -plays. They also provide French subtitles for the final video.

Cultural awareness

Students are provided with the opportunity to discover more about Paris,
focusing on the history and culture of the city.

Materials required
