SCHEME OF WORK

LEARNING OBJECTIVES [NATIONAL CURRICULUM] ACTIVITY RESOURCES
To learn that there are many aspects to keeping healthy (ref: Science QCA Unit 5A ‘Staying Healthy’). Brainstorm what we need to be healthy.
Present children with research brief: we know that it is important to drink water to stay healthy, but why? Why is water so important? Children discuss why it is important to drink water.
Children research why using the internet, books etc. Children collate their findings and feedback.

‘Why do we need water to learn?’ (word.doc)
‘How can we tell if we are thirsty?’ (word.doc)
To research what the issues are in school that prevent children having easy access to water. Children decide how they will structure a survey of the school to evaluate how water is being used at present. Children look around the school to observe the current state of water use in the classrooms and talk to adults and children about water use. Children to note on clipboards and take pictures (possibly video clips). What problems have they observed in classrooms? Do all classrooms store water in the same way? Do all teachers like the idea of having the water bottle carrying systems for their classrooms?

For plenary, show children the website links on interactive whiteboard if available.

To plan a competition to design a logo for the water bottle carriers. Explain that for the basic water bottle carrier will be a small plastic box just big enough to fit six water bottles. This is the ideal size for the tables, is hard, durable, waterproof. Explain that we need to think about presenting what we have found out to the children and staff in the school. Children plan a competition to design a logo for the water bottle carriers. Paper and pens for competition ideas.
In the next three sessions children learn to create a multimedia presentation using text, images, and sounds. They learn how to communicate messages by using a combination of movie clips and text (ref: ICT QCA Unit 3A Combining Text and Graphics). They will be taught to create links between pages and show sensitivity to the needs of their audience (ref: ICT QCA Unit 6A Multimedia Presentation).

Key idea: that computer software can include a range of media and gives the user a range of options (ref: ICT QCA Unit 6A Multimedia Presentation).

Work with children on key ICT skills involved in inserting video clips, text and new slides for powerpoint presentation. Children write script for their presentations. Possible basic structure might be: introduction > facts about why it is so important to drink water > plans for water bottle carriers > competition brief. Powerpoint (or other multimedia software)
To learn to use a camera to film video clips for the presentation.

To learn how to perform their script to the camera.

Children work out how they will video their script. What is the best way to arrange our group for the camera? What shall we use as a backdrop?

Children film their video clips.

Digiital camera that can take video clips or video camera

Technique: to design multimedia pages (ref: ICT QCA Unit 6A Multimedia Presentation).

To use a multimedia authoring program to organise, refine and present information in different forms for a specific audience (ref: ICT QCA Unit 6A Multimedia Presentation).

Children design their powerpoint presentation using their clips and writing the text.

Powerpoint (or other multimedia software)

In the following weeks, the children present their project and competition to the school, possibly in whole school assembly. Then each class watch the presentation in their classrooms on their interactive whiteboards before designing their logos. The children running the project then pick a winner, male and female. Winning designs are then printed up as stickers and stuck to the plastic boxes that are the water carriers.
